A lavender story

Lavender is my favorite color. It’s featured heavily at SkinSense — from our stationary to the decor of the spa’s rooms and hallways. It is calming and soothing to look at. In the same way, lavender oil too is calming and soothing to use. And we do use it a lot, in our diffusers, creams and for massage therapy. But did you know that it’s a powerful anti-bacterial agent as well?

With most of us staying-at-home (again), why not bring a little extra lavender fragrance into the home for relaxation and healing? And it will definitely add some holiday magic in the air, along with all the decorations.

Lavender has a very interesting history. There are many biblical references made to the plant as a protection against evil and temptation. In terms of its healing history, Pliny the Elder, back in Roman times, recommended lavender for menstrual problems, upset stomachs, kidney disorders, jaundice, and dropsy.

As the plague took hold of Europe, many grave-robbers who plundered the victims’ bodies washed themselves in lavender vinegar. And even though they came in contact with the disease more than most people, they rarely died. In sixteenth-century France, lavender was considered an effective protection against infection.
