“I believe in manicures. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick.” — Audrey Hepburn

Girls love manicures! I know I do. For me, there’s nothing like perfectly polished nails to feel instantly chic, pulled together, and confident. And in times of stress — COVID stress in particular, small luxuries such as caring for my nails become therapy.

I guess a million other girls have turned to nail care too as the hashtag #nailfie (nail selfie) has gained 1.6 million posts on Instagram.

So, let’s take a closer look at our nails. What is this body part? And what does it do?

Our nails are made of laminated keratin protein. This protects our fingertips and the surrounding tissue from injuries and serves to enhance the delicate movements of the fingers. In addition, our nails act as indicators for malnutrition, kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid disease, lung disease and other health problems.

If your nails look pale, yellow, bluish, rippled with dark lines, or dry and brittle, see your doctor or dermatologist.

Needless to say, we need to take care of our overall health — eat healthy, exercise regularly and choose a healthy lifestyle.
