“If my mouth doesn’t say it my face definitely will.”

When it comes to my teeth and gums, I admit I am an absolute health freak. I have every kind of rinse, different kinds of toothpaste, all kinds of flosses and an electric toothbrush. I also have a water pick and use all these products religiously. A clean mouth is my thing.

Why? Because good oral health prevents acne breakouts, keeping my skin clear and promoting overall good health.

According to Beverly Hills dentist, Chantal Khalili, there is a correlation with people having problems with their teeth and gums and their overall health which can in turn affect skin health.

Bacteria on your skin is part of a defense system called the microbiome. The inside of the mouth also contains its own microbiome as does the upper gastrointestinal tract. When the bacteria in these microbiomes gets out of balance the skin breaks out and develops acne and the insides of our mouths can suffer causing inflammation, gingivitis and other infections. It is all about keeping our immune systems in tip top shape. And the importance of oral and skin health is emphasized much more now with COVID as we have to wear face masks to stay safe when going out in public.
